About Me

My photo
I am retired and like to travel by motor home across the United States and Canada. In the winter I hope to spend more time with my WIN (Wandering Individual Network) friends in the California and Arizona desert. I know my trip reports are having too many details, but I am writing them for myself, if anybody else enjoys them, that is fine too.

Eureka - June 2018

June 3, 2018.
Monday, I introduced Susie to the Ramblers.
We walked in Rio Dell. Denise, one of the walkers, lives in this small town and guided us.
When we came back to her house we had a pot luck dinner. She provided the chicken and we had brought salads, desserts and other side dishes.
We were forty people. The weather was still fine and we had a good time.

In the evening I danced at the lodge. We had a good turn-out. 64 dancers showed up.
Tuesday, I walked again in Sequoia Park. This time I also walked the trails outside the forest.

People were sliding down a fallen tree. It is kind of dangerous. One can fall off or get stopped by the roots of the tree.

Friday, I walked on the waterfront. We had blue skies, not one cloud in sight.

An angler had caught a salmon and was cutting it up.

Saturday morning, I went to Pierson’s and bought an industrial shelf unit. Scott picked it up with his pick- up truck and we assembled it.
What used to be a sauna is now a storage area. Since Hanna died, Claudia needs more space for some items from Hanna’s house. I used most of the space. My stuff is now on the shelf unit. I have to buy another one for Claudia’s new belongings.

In the evening I went Down Town for Arts Alive. It is on the first Saturday of the month.
The Pan Dulce Steel Band was playing near the gazebo.

In the same area people, who want to be elected for public office, were talking to prospective voters. One guy was also carrying a sign trying to get people to choose Jesus.

Musicians were playing on several street corners.

Musicians were also playing in art galleries.

A local school had a fund raiser BBY at the Moose Lodge on Sunday early afternoon. They served tri-tip steak with oysters.

I went to the Immanuel Lutheran Church where the German speaking group meets every two months. Carolyn, who teaches German at the Arcata Highschool, organizes this.
On my way to the church I observed this deer. It was not afraid.

June 10, 2018.
Weather-wise this was a good week. It did not rain during the day and we saw some sun.
I had a doctor appointment on Monday. I wanted my cholesterol level checked again.
Since I have all of my worldly belongings now neatly stored in the sauna, on the new shelf unit, I bought another shelf unit for Claudia’s stuff which she will bring over from Hanna’s house.
Scott picked it up and I assembled it.
Friday, I walked with the Ramblers on Horse Mountain. We did the Cold Spring Loop.
We walked through Pine Forests and meadows.

There were some hills to climb.

We had lunch near Maple Rock. Large maple trees provided shade.

It rained all night.
Saturday, at 10:45 AM, I picked up Susie and we went to Patrick’s Point State Park for a ranger guided hike.
It was actually a learning walk. Nancy, the ranger, stopped and told us the names of flowers and bushes.
It was very interesting.
We also stopped at the Sumeg Village and got a lecture of how the Yurok people build their canoes and houses.

We walked the Rim Trail. The rain had stopped and we enjoyed sunny weather.

From Wedding Rock we had a wonderful view of the coastline.

On the way home Susie and I had lunch at the Seascape restaurant, at the pier, in Trinidad.
The day could not have been any better.
Sunday, I did my walk on the waterfront.

June 17, 2018.
This was a week without rain.
Monday, I went back to the doctor’s office and the nurse practitioner removed a small growth on my left temple. It was sent to a laboratory and when the results came back I was told that I have to see a dermatologist who will remove more of the flesh in that area.
I did walk with the Wednesday group at Mad River Beach

and Friday with the Ramblers in Prairie Creek Redwood State Park.

We ate our lunch at the Big Tree.

Gayle was enjoying her lunch on a big tree trunk.

It was a wonderful walk.

Friday evening, I went with Susie to the Elks Lodge for Cook your own Steak and dancing. She made it clear that we are only friends and that she does not want a relationship. I heard that song before. Older women do not want to get too close to a man.

The Oyster Fest in Arcata was on Saturday. There were a lot of people.

There were several booths were oysters were sold. All had long lines. People waited patiently for something I do not like to eat.

One place sold steaks.

There were several bands. Mary was dancing alone in front of one of them.

McKinley’s statue was draped with stuff. Some people in Humboldt County want the statue removed because of his policies toward Native Americans.

Sunday morning, I met Claudia and Scott, for breakfast, at the Elks Lodge. Fathers got a free breakfast, because it was Fathers Day.

My next stop was the beach near Fields Landing. I walked on the Beach to the Gill’s by the Bay restaurant and then walked back to the car on the sidewalk.

In the afternoon I went for Wine and Jazz to the Morris Graves Art Museum. Every third Sunday they have a jazz band playing music.

June 24, 2018.
We started the week with a wonderful hike in Russ Park in Ferndale.

The Zipporah’s Pond is located at the top of a high hill. We could not figure out where the water comes from. The water is covered with green plant material.

There was still fog in the valley and I could not get a good picture.

After the walk I drove to the Eureka Senior Center where they had a Block Party. They served box lunches and entertained the visitors with music. Booths were on the side of the street and information was available for services for older people.

In the evening I danced at the lodge.
Tuesday morning I walked the Hikshari Trail. Flowers are bluming now.

In the evening I danced at the Swiss Club. There were some new people and I had a lot of fun. Some of the women I dance with wanted me to sing to the German songs. No way, it is enough that one of the lady accordion players sang.
I walked with the Wednesday group to the Mad River pedestrian bridge.
Thursday I went to the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds for the Fair.

Craftsmen displayed their wares.

The Railroad Club had a big display.

The pretty, little Cow Girl and her calf were very popular.

There were no people to dance with at the Thursday Summer Concert.
I do not like to jump around by myself as so many people do.

Friday, we walked the Skunk Cabbage section of the Coastal Trail. It was a beautiful, but not easy hike. The trail is covered with roots from the trees and one has to be very careful. It was a 5.8 mile hike. Three members of the group continued on to the beach.

In the evening I went to the Elks Lodge and danced until the band took a break. I was lucky, Esther was there and I had a dance partner.
Joan and I did the Arcata Marsh Tour Saturday afternoon. We joined a guide at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary Interpretive Center and walked around the ponds. The guide told us about the birds and plants at the Marsh.

A bird was posing for us.

Sunday was another terrific day. People were on their paddle boards.

July 1, 2018.
Monday, we went up Trinidad Head. Joan walked with the group for the first time. She did fine on the steep trail.

Tuesday I walked alone and Wednesday Joan and I walked the new Humboldt Bay Trail.
Thursday I went to the Elks Lodge where a club displayed their old cars. There were some good looking vehicles.

In the evening I went to another Summer Concert. Vern George and his band were playing. He is very popular in Humboldt County. People were telling me that he played at their High School dances. I have never seen so many people attend the concert. There were also many Native Americans. Vern George is a Hoopa Indian.
There were a few dancers from the Moose Lodge and I was able to dance a lot.

Friday, before lunch, I danced at the Senior Center. The Accordionairs were providing the music.
From 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM I was selling fireworks at the Moose Lodge. We did not sell much. I hope we do better in the next few days.

On Saturday I walked with Joan the Hikshari Trail. We still have fantastic weather.
Sunday afternoon Joan and I went to the Humboldt Botanical Garden for the Summer Music Series. The Scotia Band was playing music from musicals, marches and other popular music.
The weather was great for being out-doors.

We also went to the butterfly enclosure.
