While we were driving towards Los Alamos, Doreen was looking through some travel brochures from Northern New Mexico.
She looked over to me and said: "Why don’t we go to Chama and take the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Train ride". I had surprised her with a balloon ride for her birthday some years ago. So she thought it would be a good idea to take the train ride.
I looked in the book for location of Elks Lodges with camping in the Chama area, but there were none.
Passport America has a member RV Park near the town.
When we arrived at the park there was nobody in the office or in the campground. The place was deserted, only a dog was barking.
We went to a camp site, hooked up the electricity and prepared lunch.
After lunch we took off for Chama. There we found a RV Park with big trees, which have golden leaves. It is a wonderful setting.
We went to the train depot and bought tickets for tomorrow’s excursion.
After dinner I went on the computer. Since we are not very far from the office I was able to go on the Internet while staying in the motor home.
I put the pictures in my Lake Powell Post and did some E mail.

The train left at 10:00 AM almost without us. Doreen slipped on the gravel while trying to board the train. She landed on all four. She did it graceful. Fortunately she did not get hurt.
The train is pulled by a steam engine, something of the past, and actually romantic.
We traveled through some beautiful valleys. The fall colors were spectacular. Part of the hills were covered with gold.
We stopped at Osier for lunch. On the menu was turkey, meat loaf and soup and salad. Doreen and I had the turkey dinner. It was like a regular Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.
Osier is the half way point between Chama and Antonito. The train from Antonito arrived a few minutes later.Osier is in the middle of no where. It is one large, modern building, set up to feed over 100 people.
The people who took the half day tour went back to the same train. We went to the train which went back to Antonito.
We arrived at Antonito at about 4:00 PM. At 4:30 PM . At 4:30 PM we boarded the bus which brought us back to Chama. We arrived there at 5:45 PM.
It was a wonderful day. People stood at the rail road crossings, waving and taking pictures.

We did the trip the past two years. The first time we were turned back due to 8 inches of snow. 12 inches at the halfway point. Both times it was awesome. The second time was a snow check so it was free. We had also gotten a $10 each voucher for dinner in town. We stayed at the passport park also.
