6-12-10
We went to the airport and picked up Vera and George, Doreen’s late husband’s brother and his wife.
They will be staying with us for a week
6-13-10
Vera and George wanted to see a friend of theirs. Since we did not have a telephone number we took a ride to their house. Of course nobody was home.
6-14-10
We went to the Oceanside Pier. Unfortunately we had June Gloom near the ocean. The sun can not break through the marine layer and we have a foggy kind of condition.
6-15-10
Today we visited Doreen’s niece Shirleyanne and her family. They also live in Carlsbad.
6-16-10
I took Vera and George to the Cabrillo National Monument today.
From there we went to Shelter Island and then to Old Town State Park in San Diego, where we had lunch. The state park represents the time when California still belonged to Mexico.
6-17-10
Today we saw Vera’s and George’s friend and her family. We met at Joe’s Crab Shack. The restaurant is located near Marina Park, next to the Convention Center.
We had a wonderful meal there.
When we came out of the restaurant a big semi truck hit a pickup truck, near our car. The pickup truck was pushed into another vehicle and this vehicle was pushed into its neighbor. Four vehicles were side by side and could not be moved.
We were lucky and were free to go. I had to bring Lyn, the friend of Vera and George, to work though, since their car was stuck. Melvin and the two children had to wait until the tow truck came and moved the stuck together vehicles.
6-18-10
We had a day of rest. In the evening we went to friends for dinner.
6-19-10
This was a beautiful day. There was no marine layer and the sun was shining at the coast.
Vera, George and I went to Tamerack Beach. We had a nice little walk and watched the surfers and swimmers.
In the evening Doreen's children came to the house for a picnic. Shirleyanne, Doreen's niece, and her two boys came too.
We had bratwurst and hamburgers and Doreen's famous potato salad.
6-20-10
This was another beautiful day. The sky along the coast was clear again.
After breakfast at Denny's we went to the harbor in Oceanside.
We listened to live music from one of the large yachts, while we were eating ice cream.
6-21-10
Doreen and I are on our own again. We took Vera and George to the airport this morning.
We hope they had a good time at our house and a good flight.
About Me
- Richard
- I am retired and like to travel by motor home across the United States and Canada. In the winter I hope to spend more time with my WIN (Wandering Individual Network) friends in the California and Arizona desert. I know my trip reports are having too many details, but I am writing them for myself, if anybody else enjoys them, that is fine too.

Julian 2010
William Heise County Park
6-07-10
I left Carlsbad at 11:00 AM and stopped at Dudley’s bakery in Santa Ysabel for some baked goodies.
Everything was half price, since they sold only the leftovers from the weekend.
At 12:45 I arrived at the park. My site was empty and I was able to set up the motorhome.
Doreen had a doctor appointment and will come tomorrow.
There were only two small RVs in the loop. I talked to the couple, who were parked near my site, for a while.
After 2:00 PM the rest of the Convair camping Club arrived.
At 4:30 PM we had Happy Hour and at 5:30 PM Dinner. We usually have heavy hors d’oeuvres on Mondays, but this time it turned out to be a regular dinner. The theme for this outing is Mexican, and there were three Mexican soups, Albondigas Soup, Chicken Tortilla Soup and Chili Soup. For dessert there was flan and churros.
The weather is just fantastic, it was in the seventies during the day and cooled off at night.
Jon kept the campfire going and I still think he will burn down one of the parks in time to come.
William Heise Park survived the last large fire, but the hills around the park still have a lot of burned trees.
It would be a shame if those big, beautiful oak trees would be destroyed..
6-08-10
Early in the morning I went for a walk and saw a lot of wild turkeys. They are all over the place.
Doreen arrived at about 9:00 AM. The group left at 10:00 AM for a long hike.
We spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon reading and resting. The club meeting was at 4:00 PM, Happy Hour at 4:30 PM and dinner at 5:30 PM.
Dinner was another Mexican feast. There was a chicken enchilada casserole, burritos, tamales, refried beans and Mexican rice.
For dessert we had Mexican fruit cake. The whole meal was an invitation for indigestion, and Doreen and I were ready for Alka Seltzer, but the meal was worth the inconvenience.
Three couples had come to visit and stay for dinner.
Jon had another campfire going and we enjoyed the company of the group.
6-9-10
On my early walk I saw again a lot of turkeys and three deer. Two male turkeys were staring at each other and made a lot of noise, while their harems watched. The males of the species are not the smartest under the sun. They either dance around the females or fight.
For lunch we went to the Julian Drugstore. The have an old fashioned soda fountain. Doreen and I shared a mint, chocolate chip milkshake, something I have not had for many years.
We had another fantastic dinner and a good camp fire.
This was a fine outing. The weather was great.
